On March 5 local time, the European Council formally adopted the revised European Climate Law, legally establishing a binding target: by 2040, the EU's net greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 90% compared to 1990 levels.

The revised regulation will take effect 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union and will be directly applicable to all EU member states. The European Commission will subsequently submit supporting proposals to advance the implementation of the 2040 climate target.
