On March 11 local time, U.S. Trade Representative Greer announced the initiation of a Section 301 investigation against 16 major trading partners, including China, the European Union, Mexico, Vietnam, India, and Japan.

This investigation is launched under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974, which authorizes the U.S. to investigate and adjudicate the trade practices of other countries and, based on the findings, recommend the President to impose unilateral sanctions.

This investigation mechanism, unilaterally led and entirely self-investigated and self-judged by the U.S., exhibits distinct unilateralist characteristics.
